I’ve been thinking a lot about incentives. Specifically, how I think incentives should be aligned. Wouldn’t it be great if you could lower your health insurance premiums by training hard and eating right? Yeah, it would. Unfortunately, I don’t have any control over the cost of health insurance. But that example really hit home for me, and of course there are a few things that I can control. So now it’s time for me to put my money where my mouth is and start leading by example. This whole thought process started a long time ago for me, but it really took off recently when I applied for a life insurance policy. Even though I’m young and healthy, I wanted that safety net for my family in case something were to happen to me. I thought this process was going to be a breeze. I thought I was the ideal customer for a life insurance agency. There was a questionnaire...piece of cake! There was blood work and a basic physical...crushed!!Or so I thought. When the results came back, I was in the “High Risk” category. What?!?! I’ve spent my entire adult life eating the right foods, training hard, minimizing my stress...in other words, doing all the right things. How could I be “High Risk”?Well, as it turns out, the life insurance company was basing that off of my Body Mass Index. You’ve probably heard about BMI, but if not it’s a simple calculation based on your height and weight. According to my BMI, I was obese. One quick glance and you’ll know that this is incorrect. While BMI can be used accurately when talking about large populations, it tends to fail epically for individuals. My weight is high relative to my height because of my muscle mass, but this wasn’t taken into consideration when reviewing my life insurance application. They just tagged me as obese, and therefore “High Risk”, and BOOM my premium was DOUBLED!!The point in telling this story is that I believe in properly aligning incentives. This life insurance company should be begging for a customer like me. Young and healthy, and capable of paying their premiums for many decades to come with very low risk. Instead, they lost a customer. Here’s how this ties back to the SHOP.As SHOP members, you should be incentivized to become stronger and fitter and get in the best shape of your life.
